on herd mentality...
One of my favorite stories is a boy in Texas, when the teacher asked the class the following question. There are nine sheep in pen, and one jumps out, how many are left? Everyone got it right, and said eight are left. The boy said none are left. The teacher said you don’t understand arithmetic, and he said "no you don’t understand sheep". --- Charlie Munger, 2008 Wesco Shareholder Meeting

Some people seem to think there's no trouble just because it hasn't happened yet. If you jump out the window at the 42nd floor and you're still doing fine as you pass the 27th floor, that doesn't mean you don't have a serious problem. -- Charlie Munger

"If you put a thousand people in barrels and push them over Niagara Falls," one of them says, "some of them will survive. And if you take those guys and push them over again, some of them will survive. And they’ll write books about how to survive being pushed over Niagara Falls in a barrel."

Munger still sees the investing world as a place where common sense can triumph -- if only because "it isn't so common."

“You never feel good when you’re buying a great bargain. When you buy a great bargain, you’re doing it with sweaty palms, you’re leaning against the crowd, engaging in contrary thinking, and you’re pretty much alone. And almost everybody in the press is telling you that you’re doing the wrong thing.”
