Many fundamental analysis used EPS, dividend, PE ratio, cash flow, balance sheet etc to analyse a stock/company that they intent to invest but i feel that fundamental analysis should go beyond that to be successful as a long term investor. They should study and examine country ecomomic figure. Shown below are only SOME of the important factor i like to share and should be included in the analysis.
- National Account i.e GDP/GNP
- Economic Activity
- Growth in different sector
- Expenditure in Private Consumption,
Retail Sales and Vehicle Sales
- Capital Investment
- Imports/Exports
- Bank Lending
- Durable Goods Order
- Industrial Production
- Capacity Utilization Rate
- Manufacturing Outputs/Employment
- Manufacturing Activity Index
- Housing Starts/Approved Permits
- Homes Sales
- Unemployment rate
- Non farms payrolls
- Initial Claims
- Money supply and Interest rate
- Inflation/deflation
- Consumer Price Index
- External Trade - balance payment/
income balance/services account
- Exchange rate
- Index Leading Indicator
any many other indicator (avalable in charts). Also to be included are the country's economic policies, economic reforms and political economic matters and its cause/effect relation.

They are release mostly in a quarterly basis and some of the above are relavent to the US market like the Initial Claims are a very important indicator to look at for the US market.

In my opinion, you only need to study the above indicator if you are a serious long term investor and dead serious to achieve SUPERIOR result.

Very sensible and very serious stuff; better leave them to the professionals. And how do you tackle accounting fraud?

CKam,
Agree but some in your list are not important. Only a few brings impact. :)
But then again, even US traders/investors do not believe in the numbers released. Eg the inflation rate.

Hi everyon,
Yes, there is the micro analysis at company level and the macro analysis at industry, country and world level. THe FA fellow will review the industry, country and world level and try to find the corelation and quantify the long term effect on the company level.
By the way, there are only a few 'iresponsible' Accountants in the industry. Most are quite noble. We are one of the few professions where we have to follow ethical guidelines. We have to be and be seen to be objective, competent, ethical and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
We compile financial figures in accordance with the fundamental accounting principles and the relevant standards and guidelines.
Thus, I believe if you ask most accountants, what is '1+1", they will definitely tell you it is 2.
You can trust most of the Accountants in their work.

P/S: psh...psh.. How many zeros do you wish to add behind the 2? You see, only zero ma!!!!!

Accounting fraud .... this is a hard one that every investor is trying to avoid. Well ... to me, i always trying to access the approach to management or the good management practice and the integrity of the CEO running the company.
The business itself must have a favourable long term economic prospects and investor needs to use value investing to form a margin of safety in his investment.
The economic data that i presented are avalable free for us to evaluate and provide us a clear perpective of how the overall market interact and thus influence our investment. Its a matter how you interprets them and this will further form an interlectual sound framework of a comprehensive analysis that you built upon.

For example, the debate of the bears are getting strength and become very frightening and if you just believe if the crowd say so, then the DJ must be heading south or collaps and that the US economy is sure entering a recession, than everyone should be out of the market now ! Yes, but despite the many problems and many weak economic data released, there are also many fundamental strength or positive economic data that has been released for example the sustained productivity growth, GDP expanded at a healthy rate, strong employment report, increased in non-farm payrolls, many new jobs been added and etc and this numbers shows that the US economy would still be expanding and that the US might not go into a recession (soon). In the shoutbox sometime ago, i argue that the fall on US market is due to a correction for the large majority investor focus is still on the subprime and problems of the US financial institution. They are in fact one day bullish and the next day bearish and we have the effect of one day good news and the next day, here come the bad news. See how efficient we are in today's market place. It is become the so call VOLATILE market (how than to read the chart for TA guy ??? )

If everybody have the mood, maybe we can analyse the world's most exciting and dynamic market - China ...... and how they interact and the effect it brings to world economy.

In short, investing is indeed very interesting yet fruitful and you may only end up a handful of stock to pick through comprehansive analysis. Normally, if i can find one then i will be in a large position.

Hi, interesting point of view.

Err.. Tee is a doctor who sometimes go fishing in the small river for terubok fish. He bring home the catch and sometimes sold it at the coffee shop. And of course, sometimes he came back empty handed. Basically he need to know few important things related how to fish successfully for this terubok eg. the rod, bait, hiding place, type of water, and time of days.

There are things that is not important to him, but may be very important to other type of people like the fisherman who fish for living. They have to track the sea level, the weather, the sea dept, the current and the type of ship, engine, sonar system, the crew, etc.

What is the moral of the story ? If U ask clifford, he will say why waste time go fishing, just buy them at the market or better still go to the reataurant and order a plate of sweet and sour tilapia and enjoy it with few glasses of beer. If U ask me ... hmmm ... i will rather enjoy the beer girls.

Are U crazy ? By the time I analyse the item no. 20, the item no.1, 2 , 3, 4,.....10, has already change. And I had to start all over again.....and again... and again.....

Just simply follow what i buy ......or do, and u will end up with all the girls.

I would say it depends on how u value yr life and what you want..

Some ppl enjoy the process of fishing.. from doing reseach on the river till see the customers eating the fish..

But some ppl just enjoy eating the fish and do not care where it comes from.

But no right or wrong, just matter of choice!

just my 2 cents..

Again, it is not as complicated as u think too. Dont follow the data, just follow ..... me, of course. (Hey ! I am not joking . )
